Research
& Innovation
EFESTO is our forge of ideas: a place where students, PhD Students, post-docs and researchers fuse scientific insight with engineering creativity to turn bold concepts into real-world solutions.
We prototype, test, and share technologies that bridge academia and industry, generating sustainable impact that matters.
Our Activity Fields
From high-fidelity simulations to full-scale prototypes, our research spans energy conversion, solar harvesting, and high-performance thermal insulation. We design, test, and share solutions that bridge academia and industry.
We publish peer-reviewed research, present at international conferences, secure patents, and create start-up opportunities — accelerating sustainable innovation while mentoring the next generation of game-changers.

Energy Conversion
We design and develop advanced technologies for efficient solar conversion, combining high-vacuum insulation, selective absorber coatings and low-emissivity coatings to minimise heat losses even at high temperatures.
Our research supports the development and production of novel thermal high-vacuum solar flat panels and photovoltaic-thermal (PV-T) systems, to enhance overall energy system efficiency while reducing environmental impact.

Solar Thermal Field
Our Solar fields are based on panels that are Solar Keymark certified and currently offer the highest global performance, reaching up to 180 °C with peak efficiencies outperforming all non-concentrating systems. But having the most efficient panels is not enough: we develop advanced system design, smart control strategies, and continuous R&D efforts to optimize the entire field’s performance under variable conditions.

Efficient Energy Transfer and Storage
Once produced, heat must be transferred and stored with minimal losses. We design vacuum-insulated pipelines and high-vacuum multilayer insulation (HVMLI) systems that outperform conventional technologies by orders of magnitude in thermal conductivity. Our solutions can ensure stable, long-term performance even at high temperatures, enabling compact, lightweight, and highly efficient thermal networks for industrial and renewable energy systems.
